Nearly two decades of my working life went into tracking counterfeit household goods and material safety violations. I have torn apart fake supplements and dodgy children's products. Cookware never struck me as counterfeit territory, and then it turned into some of the worst of it, right up until my own sister bought a fake "titanium" pan and had no idea what was coating it. That pan changed how I look at every kitchen I walk into.

Eighteen of those years were inside consumer product safety and manufacturing compliance. My job was to open up imported goods, work out what they were actually made of, and decide whether the claims printed on the carton were true.
I saw knockoff chargers cook themselves. I cut open imitation water filters made from plastics with no supplier record behind them. And yes, I sat across from cookware sellers calling a sprayed-on surface "premium" who could not name the chemistry in it.
Titanium cookware still went straight past me, though, until my sister rang one evening with a very ordinary question.
She had ordered a "Titanium Frying Pan" a few days before, from an online ad promising it was "PFAS-free," "medical-grade," and "safer than the nonstick everyone warns you about." The photos were convincing. The reviews read as real. Under $60, and she was sure she had won.
Then the pan arrived, and something felt wrong.
Held under a strong lamp, the finish looked blotchy. The base went dull and streaky inside a handful of uses. And every time it got properly hot, the pan let off a sharp chemical smell.
She assumed it needed seasoning, or some sort of "breaking in." Two weeks later eggs were gluing themselves to the surface, and she asked me to take a proper look at it.
What I found bothered me straight away.
The Teardown That Stayed With Me
I carried the pan back to my bench and ran the same material checks I had done for years.
Under magnification the "titanium surface" was already lifting, with microscopic separation creeping in at the rim. The cooking surface was a sprayed coating barely thicker than paint, sitting on ordinary stainless steel.

The word "Titanium" was simply printed on the carton.
And I keep running into it, again and again.
Titanium cookware took off online and the fakers moved in fast. Plenty of what sells as a "titanium pan" now is steel or aluminum with a titanium-colored coating sprayed over it, and nobody selling one will tell you what went into that spray.
In a product listing photo, hardly anyone can tell the two apart.
Run one hot a few times, though, and the coating starts giving itself away.
Nobody mentions that in the listing.
What A Fake "Titanium" Pan Is Really Coated With
Almost everyone shopping for titanium cookware is running from something, usually the coated nonstick pan already sitting in the cupboard. They want fewer chemicals between the metal and dinner, and a surface that will not flake into the food by year three.
The trouble is that a counterfeit "titanium" pan is a coated pan in disguise, and coatings are where PFAS lives.
And the person doing the cooking almost never finds out.
Several of the knockoffs on my bench gave off a sharp chemical odor once I ran them hot a few times. Others turned patchy across the middle within a month. One shed a ring of flakes at the rim after nothing but ordinary scrubbing and a few hot sears.
That is what heat does to a coating, and once it begins to break down, fine particles and chemical residue can end up in whatever you are cooking.¹
That is the part I could not stop thinking about.

Six panellists scored it 0.0 for odour and 0.0 for taste against a permitted 2.5, so nothing they could taste or smell came off it. That report does not test for PFAS and I will not pretend it does. A PFAS-free claim rests on there being no coating at all, and a brand handing you a report number is not the brand hiding one. Asking for that document is the fourth thing I check now. Here are the first three.
1. Look For A Clear Statement About The Cooking Surface
Counterfeits almost never say what the cooking surface actually is. They reach for softer phrasing that sounds close enough:
•"Titanium-reinforced"
•"Titanium-infused"
•"Titanium-style coating"
•"Titanium nonstick surface"
Every one of those describes a coating, not a metal.

Counterfeit cookware sellers disappear and resurface under new marketplace listings every few weeks. New brand name. New storefront. Review count back at zero. The pan inside the box never changes, and neither does the coating on it.
